Should always be nice to new people, because they have a funny habit of turning into regular people, and remember who was helpful and who was less than helpful.

If young folk were allowed to talk like that, surely there would be no snide remarks now would there? Clearly there is a problem with some young folk talking like this.
And some airsofters young and old are just attracted by cool features and ROF's.
well im happy to welcome aboard new players to the ww2 airsoft scene, we need you!
i think new players might find its not all about the fast fire rate and big ammo mags, as they dont really exsist in this area of airsoft but might enjoy the experiance of ww2 infantry and combat, the stranger uniforms, equipment, weapons and simply taking part in exciting missions as a coordinated and uniformed army.
once the first game is out of the way then im sure anyone would want to do ww2 airsoft again whatever your age.
The view that new people turn up expecting a ww2 dressed open day and then see the light isn't always true. I became interested because of everything you've described above, waited for an event near me and jumped in fully prepared to play in team/squad spirit.
Though in this case I can see how the OP gave a very leading impression.

without some sort of command structure, the events would turn into the usual skirmish day poorly coordinated rabble!
sometimes its kind of easier to take a few orders, makes it abit more real.
